Reflection

I started taking this course as a senior in high school. Before I took this course, I was scared that I could not correctly write an essay at the level Professor Hammett expected of us. This course would be much more complicated than my current high school English class, and I believed that professors wouldn't offer much help when I needed it. I was wrong. Professor Hammett was an excellent teacher and was open and available to every student when they needed her help on any assignment. She was extremely thorough in her teaching, which helped me better understand how to write an essay correctly.

We had to write a four-page essay on a social epidemic for our first writing assignment. At first, I was completely lost. I had never written an essay that long before, and I was unsure of how to write an essay of that length and make it sound like I was able to write at a collegiate level. Professor Hammett helped me figure out what to write about and stuck with me. She reviewed my essay for the entire class period. She was never harsh in her teaching, when I made mistakes she politely taught me how to fix them. My topic was child sex trafficking around The United States. I have watched movies, read stories, and seen news articles about this topic before, but this topic for an essay really allowed me to dive more deeply into this issue, which I appreciated.

During Professor Hammett’s course, my writing skills have blossomed. Her guidance has surpassed the teachings of my high school English classes. I entered this course struggling to write a paragraph, and now I can confidently produce four pages of well-researched content. Additionally I have turned into a faster writer. At the beginning of my course I was having a hard time finding the right words for different essays, now I can write with ease.
